The retail chain will close only two stores in Florida. They are the locations at the Jacksonville Regional Shopping Center and Palatka Mall.
J.C. Penney’s two Palm Beach County stores, at Wellington Green and Boynton Beach Mall, will remain open.
Overall, J.C. Penney will shutter 138 stores across the country — almost a quarter of the total in just in four states. Nine will close in Texas, eight in Minnesota and seven each in Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Store close-out sales, the company said, will start in April and the stores will be closed by the middle of June. After that, J.C. Penney will still list about 900 stores.
“This safe, indoor, air-conditioned and entertaining alternative to traditional outdoor Halloween activities will offer free trick-or-treating fun the whole family can enjoy,” the mall said in a news release announcing the event.
The mall is located at 801 N. Congress Ave. in Boynton Beach.
Beginning at 10 a.m., mall managers will be randomly giving a way a host of items to shoppers including $50 gift cards, beauty gift baskets, handbags, t-shirts, movie passes, complimentary lunches and dinners. The items come from a variety of mall retailer including JCPenney, Youfit Health Clubs, Perfumania, Sephora, LA Leggings, Buca di Beppo, East West Bistro Buffet, Pops Corn and Versace Gelateria Italiana & Gourmet.
“National Random Acts of Kindness Day is an ideal opportunity for Boynton Beach Mall to show appreciation to shoppers and to encourage thoughtfulness and charity in the community,” said Poonam Patel, director of marketing and business development at Boynton Beach Mall. “We’re looking forward to spreading smiles throughout the day and encouraging others to pay the kindness forward.”
In addition to surprising shoppers, Boynton Beach Mall management will also be treating its retailers to sweet treats and coffee, officials said.
