Labor Day 2016: What to expect from holiday sales

Labor Day marks the official end of summer, so bargain hunters should be able to find big savings on end of season sports apparel, summer clothing, swing sets and pools, according to the website.

Shoppers can also expect to find deals on back-to-school items, as retailers look to clear out merchandise to make room for their holiday stock.

September is also a good month to buy appliances and mattress sets, with discounts ranging from 25 to 50 percent, FatWallet said.

1)       Labor Day sales will extend beyond the holiday weekend: For holiday travelers or those choosing to spend the extended weekend with family and friends, don’t worry, as most Labor Day sales events extend into the following week. Online deal sites like will aggregate all the extended sales and coupons and vet out the best savings available for those that waited for bigger discounts post-holiday.

2)       Expect bundles and gift card bonuses: Some Labor Day sales feature items bundled with store gift cards. Like similar holiday deals, these can be significant and timely savings, especially if the gift card is from a store you plan to shop at later this year. Since video game consoles and HDTV prices have bottomed out on last year’s models, retailers are offering additional bonuses of gift cards to enhance the deal this holiday.

3)    Look for end of season clearance on sports Apparel with savings of 20 to 30 percent. There will also be aggressive pre-season sale pricing on hunting apparel and gear from top stores like Cabela’s, Walmart, Gander Mountain and Bass Pro Shops.

4)     Summer clothing clearance will be combined with Labor Day deals, creating the perfect opportunity to buy t-shirts, shorts, sandals, swimwear and sunglasses at the lowest seasonal prices of the season. Discounts will range from 50-75 percent off at both big box and branded stores like AERO, Levi’s, Nike and PacSun.

5)       Back-to-School tech savings can average 25 percent or more during Labor Day clearance events, including great deals on backpacks and a large selection of laptop deals.

6)      Expect savings on appliances and mattress sets. With stores looking to make room for newer inventory, Labor Day sales are an excellent time to buy major appliances and mattress sets. Discounts generally range from 25 to 50 percent off and include a larger selection of brands and styles than we’ll see during the Black Friday deals.

7)       Lastly, folks will find the year’s best savings on swing sets and pools during Labor Day with average discounts from 20-30 percent of.  Some above-ground budget pools (up to $150) will be available at 30-50 percent off (NOTE: these will sell out of stock quickly, as will metal and plastic swing sets which can reach 50 percent off). Wooden swing sets under $700 will be 20-30 percent off and larger, higher quality wooden playground sets reach 10-20 percent off, some with free delivery or free in-store pickup.
