Hhgregg bucks trend, will close on Thanksgiving

Electronics and appliance chain Hhgregg announced Tuesday it will keep all of its 220 stores closed on Thanksgiving, saying it is important for employees to spend the holiday with their family.

“We stand behind our core values and beliefs of being a family-first company,” said Bob Riesbeck, President and CEO of Hhgregg. “It’s important to us that our associates are able to be home with their families on Thanksgiving, and we are encouraging our customers to do the same – knowing great deals will be available online, on Black Friday and through the weekend.”

The company said its announcement makes it the first major electronics retailer to draw a line in the sand on Thanksgiving Day hours. Last year, Hhgregg was opened from 4 p.m. to midnight on Thanksgiving.

“We continue to see a shift in the market place and feel it’s time for electronics industry leaders to take charge and move the shift back, in order to give associates, and people in general, more quality time with family and friends,” said Chris Sutton, the company’s Senior VP of Marketing.

The Black Friday website BfAds.net reports that 43 stores will remain closed on Thanksgiving this year, including GameStop, Home Depot and Costco.

Brent Shelton, a spokesman for BfAds.net, said the closure list is “on par” with last year, adding that the website expects about a dozen more retailers to follow suit in the coming weeks.
