Holiday shopping: 156 million Americans to hit stores on “Super Saturday”

With a week to go before Christmas, retailers are hoping to lure last-minute shoppers into stores this weekend with sales and discount.

Roughly 156 million Americans are expected to shop for gift items on Saturday, making it the biggest day of the holiday shopping season, according to the National Retail Federation.

RELATED: Holidays 4-1-1: Your shopping guide to the season

The unofficial holiday  has been dubbed “Super Saturday” by the industry because it is the last Saturday before Christmas.

The federation said its annual survey of holiday shoppers found more people planned to hit stores on Super Saturday than over the Thanksgiving weekend.

“While many consumers got a head start with holiday shopping by taking advantage of extraordinary sales over Thanksgiving weekend, more shopping and great deals are yet to come,”  said Matthew Shay the federation’s president and CEO. “We expect retailers will once again be competitive on price and value options in the final stretch, especially on Super Saturday.”

Only one in 10 shoppers have purchased everything on their holiday lists, the federation said. Most shoppers have completed about half of their gift buying, the federation added.

That has retailers in full battle mode, with several national chains planning to stay open for marathon stretchers in hopes of reaching last-minute shoppers.

Kohl’s will be opened around the clock beginning at 7 a.m. on Tuesday (Dec. 20) and continuing through Christmas Eve.

Toys”R”Us will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturday (Dec. 17) and Sunday (Dec. 18).

Holiday shopping: Gifts bought with “payday loans” come with hefty price tag

Considering a “payday loan” to buy holiday gifts this year? Think again.

FILE - This April 3, 2015, file photo, shows an ACE Cash Express outlet on San Mateo Boulevard in Albuquerque, N.M. The outlet sits on a block which has several small loan storefronts. The lenders who advance people money on their paychecks charge exorbitant interest rates that often snare the most vulnerable customers in a cycle of debt, the industry’s critics have long said. Yet even consumer advocates who loathe the industry admit it fulfills a need: Providing small amounts of cash quickly to people who can’t qualify for credit cards or a bank loan. The website stopthedebttrap.org looked at how much it would cost to buy the top 15 items on this year’s Toys”R”Us Hot Toy list using a payday advance — and the findings were startling.

The average interest on a payday loan is 391 percent nationally, according to the website. As a result, items purchased with an advance typically cost two to three times as much.

“The holidays are the most lucrative time of year for most payday lenders, who take advantage of people’s desire to do something nice for those they love,” the website said. “With signs promising EZ Cash. No Credit, No Problem. In fact, taking out a payday loan, even a small one, is a huge problem.”

Take this year’s hottest toy — a Hatchimal. The toy retails for about $70. If you use a payday loan to buy it, you’ll owe $154.

The Power Wheels 12-volt Wild Thing ride-on toy runs $330, but you’ll pay $727 for it using a payday advance.

HOT TOY ALERT: Hatchimals will be back in stock at Toys”R”Us on Sunday

The hottest toy of the season will be back in stock at Toys”R” Us stores across the country this weekend.

Remember Cabbage Patch Kids or Tickle Me Elmo? Brace yourself, parents, the latest toy craze has hatched. Hatchimals are large speckled eggs with furry, magical creatures inside that eventually crack out of the egg but only if given enough human attention. As you rub the egg it lights up and makes sounds. Eventually, the baby animal inside begins to peck away and break free. Kids can watch it develop its own personality as it matures from a baby to adulthood, where it can repeat words and play games. Hatchimals landed in stores on Oct. 7 and are already hard to find. A Toys R Us spokesperson said they're currently limited to one per customer. I called several stores, and they were all sold out. They were also out of stock online. Sellers on Amazon are asking $190 for a toy that's listed for $50 at Target, Toys R Us and Wal-Mart, and that's if you can actually find it on the shelves. (Learning Resources)

(Learning Resources)

The national toy retailer says it is getting a new shipment of Hatchimals, and will be restocking store shelves on Sunday (Dec. 18). Stores open at 6 a.m.

RELATED: Can’t find a Hatchimal? Check out these alternatives

The interactive toys are virtually impossible to find in stores, and resellers looking to cash in on their popularity have marked them up dramatically on sites like eBay.

It is unclear how many of each toy will be available as part of the shipment.

But the price tag has gone up. According to Toys”R”Us, Hatchimals, which had retailed for $59.99, will cost $79.99 on Sunday.

If you miss out on Sunday’s shipment, Toys”R”Us said its stores will continue to receive Hatchimals over the coming days.

“Toys“R”Us trucks filled with in-demand products (yes, even Hatchimals) will be headed to stores throughout the coming week to replenish, giving parents the best chance at finding last-minute presents to pack under the tree,” the company said.

Toys”R”Us is also offering parents a chance to win one of the popular toys.

“Toys“R”Us rewards members who shop in-store each day, now through Thursday, December 22, will be automatically entered for a chance to win a $1,000 Toys“R”Us gift card PLUS a Hatchimal,” the company said. “A new winner will be drawn every day through 12/22, and each day a customer makes a purchase with their Rewards“R”Us number, they’re given a new chance to win.”

Holiday shopping: For those who have it all, consider a tour of local breweries

A growing number of shoppers plan to give their friends and family members an experience — not stuff — this holiday season.Beer Flights

Over the last five years, consumers have shifted some of their holiday spending away from goods, opting instead to buy services and other experience-based gifts.

One local option for holiday shoppers looking to give an experience over goods: a trip to several local breweries.

Discover The Palm Beaches, the county’s official tourism marketing organization, offers a savings pass that lets residents and out-of-town visitors sample craft beer at five area breweries.

The Discover Brew Pass is $15 and is sold exclusively by the tourism group. Participating breweries are Accomplice Brewery & Ciderworks, Barrel of Monks, Due South Brewing Co., Tequesta Brewing Co. and Twisted Trunk Brewing.

Black Friday may be over, but the deal hunters at BestBlackFriday.com have put together a list of holiday shipping deadlines for dozens of major national retailers.

Although many retailers will be able to ship items right up until Christmas Eve — the rush delivery comes with a cost. If you want to avoid added fees, Friday (Dec. 16) is the last day to get standard shipping from some retailers. For others, the cutoff is Monday (Dec. 19).

Meanwhile, Friday is also known as “Free Shipping Day,” when many national retail offer free shipping on online orders and guarantee delivery by Christmas.

Here is part of BestBlackFriday.com’s shipping deadline list. To view the complete list, click HERE.

Holiday shopping: For those who have everything, consider an annual membership

A growing number of shoppers plan to give their friends and family members an experience — not stuff — this holiday season.

Over the last five years, consumers have shifted some of their holiday spending away from goods, opting instead to buy services and other experience-based gifts.

One local option for holiday shoppers looking to give an experience over goods: An annual pass to one of the Palm Beach County’s tourist attractions.

Lion Country Safari is Florida’s only drive-through safari and walk-through amusement park is a gift that keeps giving all year long. Annual passholders receive free admission and parking. Cost: Children’s passes (ages 3-9) $60; Regular passes (ages 10-64) $75; Senior passes $67

Palm Beach Zoo/South Florida Science Center: If you are shopping for a gift for a whole family, consider memberships to the Palm Beach Zoo or the South Florida Science Center. Families can enjoy the memberships all year long. Passholders also get special perks and discounts.

A family membership to the zoo costs $145. A family pass to the science center is $100.
