Mother’s Day spending expected to reach record $23.6 billion

American consumers are expected to spend a record $23.6 billion on Mother’s Day gifts and items this year, breaking last year’s high of $21.4 billion, according the results of a survey released Monday by the National Retail Federation.

The retail trade group said shoppers are expected to spend an average of $186.39 for the holiday, up from last year’s $172.22.

The increase is expected to be driven largely by spending on jewelry and personal services, the federation said.

Mother’s Day 2016: Spending expected to fall slightly

Mother’s day spending is expected to drop slightly this year, after reaching a record-breaking high in 2015.

Families are expected to spend an average of $172.22 on Mother’s Day related items this year, down 0.2 percent from last year’s high of $172.63, according to the Florida Retail Federation, a statewide trade association.

Across the nation, Mother’s Day related spending is expected to reach $21.4 billion, the federation said.

“It’s wonderful to see families wanting to celebrate and honor their mothers and we expect near record spending once again,” said FRF President/CEO Randy Miller. “Florida’s economy continues to outpace the national economy, which should bode well for Sunshine State retailers who price items right and take advantage of the expected increased sales opportunities.”

Shoppers plan to spend $4.2 billion on jewelry, $4.1 billion on special outings such as dinner or brunch, $2.4 billion on flowers, $2.2 billion on gift cards, according to the National Retail Federation’s 2016 Mother’s Day Spending Survey.
